Day 9/10 - Whitehorse to Tok Alaska

From Whitehorse you cross into Yukon Territory and then cross the border into Alaska.  This section of the highway is extremely dusty from gravel and has bumps and crevices that are very rough and dangerous to travel even in slow speeds. We had thought to take the Cassiar Highway on the way back but were convinced by other travelers to avoid this road even if by car.  Spoke to some ladies who got some beautiful fox photos on the Cassiar.  Will consider this next time.

I saw a cartoon like creature the size of a small bear with large claw feet and wondered what it was. I was not able to snap a photo.  Looked up mammal of this area and decided it must have been a wolverine.  (See wiki photo)

Some parts of the road are flagged to warn you to go very slow or to pay attention to a big hole. Frost heaves can uproot the best roads and there is constant construction for this long stretch.

When we were not dodging frost heaves, bumps and gravel, we saw beautiful Alpine like mountain scenery surrounding Kluane and Summit Lake. We past Destruction Bay and Haines Junction which has a turn off that takes you to Haines, AK which we decided to visit when we return via the Marine highway.  We also missed seeing Hyder and Stewart which will be easier to visit by Marine highway than the Cassiar Highway. We crossed the border then on to Tok, Alaska.

Tom spotted a moose swimming in a lake so we luckily were able to get a photo.

We were happy to get to Tok where a wonderful RV park and RV wash awaited us.  Tok is  known as the RV wash capital because of the dusty bumpy road that everyone just traveled. It is really the only road to take.

This RV park seemed the only reason for Tok to exist. Many of the businesses have closed down.  There were a few eating spots and gas stations and gift shops. They have dog sled demonstrations at the RV park several times a week and often invite local bands to perform in their large banquet room.
