Alaska Canada Trip Planning

We had no idea what to expect as we set out on our journey on the Alcan(Alaska Canada highway). We had spoken to rvers who made the trip and they never related too much, and now we know why. Some have made 2 and 3 trips so we felt we had nothing to worry about. We had the RV serviced and carried tools and extra belts with us in case of a breakdown. You are traveling into areas with no cell phone or emergency support so it is definitely something to prepare for.

We read the "must have" mile by mile reference of the Alaska Canada highway and border access routes called the "Milepost".  This guide is a recently driven report of the roads and is published annually.  It describes the upcoming bridges, width, shoulder, curves  and %grade of the roads and "must see" side trips and alternates.  It told you where you might spot moose, bear, fox, sheep, bison, eagles, glaciers and picture spots like mile 0 and the signpost forest.

We used a spotwalla tracking device to capture our location and so we could be found in an emergency. The map it created shows our true route.

Most of the pages have a small story so we can remember the high points.  You will need to scroll to the bottom to see photos.
